Oxygen Equipment Cleaning Recommendations
Oxygen Concentrators
- Exterior of the concentrator should be wiped with a damp cloth once a week.
Filters
- The black coarse inlet filters on the concentrator should be washed thoroughly under hot water twice a week. Excess water should be squeezed from the filter or shaken off and the filter allowed to air dry for at least 15 minutes (or until dry) before replacing on concentrator. Soap should not be used when washing the concentrator filters.
- Vacuuming the filters weekly is also beneficial.
Tubing and Connectors
- Replace extension tubing as needed (usually every 6-12 months)
- Extension tubing do not need to be washed.
- Check regularly for major kinks or possible splitting
- Note: The swivel connector can be reused
Nasal Cannula/Mask
- The 7-foot nasal cannula should be changed on a monthly basis.
- The outside tips of the nasal cannula can be washed each morning IF THE CONCENTRATOR IS LEFT RUNNING.
- Wash nasal cannula from the bolo (where single tube divides) to the nasal prong tips using a few drops of soap and warm running water; rinse thoroughly, let dry.
- The nasal cannula should not be disconnected from the 50-foot extension or the swivel when washing.
Cylinder Carry Bags
Carry bags can be washed thoroughly with warm water and rinsed well; squeeze out and allow to air dry as long as needed. Bags can also be wiped down with a clean cloth.
Disposable Oxygen Humidifiers
Distilled water should be used in disposal oxygen humidifier bottles. Water should be changed twice a week and the humidifier bottles washed in hot water. Humidifier bottles should be changed if any malfunction occurs, if any part breaks, or if they appear discoloured or excessively dirty.
Regular care and cleaning of your oxygen concentrator, oxygen tubing, nasal cannula, and other associated equipment will help prolong the use of your disposable tubing and improve their comfort.
