Have plans to explore the world this summer? Don’t leave home without your CPAP!
A proper sleep is always essential to good health. Feeling refreshed is an important part of travelling so you don’t miss out on sightseeing or fun activities you have planned. We highly recommend that people with sleep apnea use CPAP every time they sleep, even if you nap.
At the airport: Your CPAP comes with a case designed to be a carry on item. Did you know that you cannot be charged any extra fees for taking the CPAP through as carry-on luggage? It is considered a medical device so they cannot charge you extra baggage fees. The other reason you want to carry it on is because it can easily become damaged or lost through regular baggage handling. Airlines misplace checked luggage all the time, so why chance it.
At your out of Country Hotel/Destination: Your CPAP comes ready to see the world, right out of the package! All you need is to pick up a universal travel adapter; these can be purchased from a luggage or travel store. Simply plug your CPAP into the appropriate adapter and the CPAP power box will convert whatever voltage it sees coming at it.
Going on a cruise: Many clients report the bedside tables in the rooms on cruise lines are very small and often the room has only one plug in that is not located near the bed, so an extension cord may be necessary. Often you can ask housekeeping for an extension cord to borrow, or pack your own just in case.
At the Campsite: If you are at a site that has electrical hookups you are all set. For those of us that like to get closer to nature and are without electrical access, batteries for CPAP are easier to use than ever before. We are lucky at IRS to have access to the most up to date battery systems.

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER:
- Use your CPAP WITHOUT the humidifier when travelling with the battery configurations as this allows the battery to give you 2-3 nights of use before recharge is necessary. Keep in mind this is a guideline only as the battery will drain more quickly at the higher pressure settings and longer length of sleeps.
- We do carry a dual battery pack at a slightly discounted price then purchasing 2 single battery packs.
- Finally, an alternative option to the battery is to purchase an inverter. Generally we recommend at least 80W from a store like Canadian Tire. Of course you would need something like a generator or a solar powered trailer battery to power this.
